Blazar Flaring Rates Measured with GLAST

چکیده
We derive the minimum observing time scales to detect a blazar at a given flux level with the LAT on GLAST in the scanning and pointing modes. Based upon Phase 1 observations with EGRET, we predict the GLAST detection rate of blazar flares at different flux levels. With some uncertainty given the poor statistics of bright blazars, we predict that a blazar flare with integral flux > ∼ 200 × 10−8 ph(> 100 MeV) cm−2 s−1, which are the best candidates for Target of Opportunity pointings and extensive temporal and spectral studies, should occur every few days.

The Spectral Index Distribution of Egret Blazars: Prospects for Glast
The intrinsic distribution of spectral indices in GeV energies of gamma-ray–loud blazars is a critical input in determining the spectral shape of the unresolved blazar contribution to the diffuse extragalactic gamma-ray background, as well as an important test of blazar emission theories. We present a maximum-likelihood method of determining the intrinsic spectral index distribution (ISID) of a...
متن کاملStatistics of Cosmological Black Hole Jet Sources: Blazar Predictions for GLAST
A study of the statistics of cosmological black-hole jet sources is applied to EGRET blazar data, and predictions are made for GLAST. Black-hole jet sources are modeled as collimated relativistic outflows with radiation beamed along the jet axis due to strong Doppler boosting. The comoving density dependence of the blazar formation rate (BFR) is assumed to follow the cosmic star formation histo...
متن کاملHigh Energy Neutrinos from the TeV Blazar 1 ES 1959 + 650
The AMANDA neutrino telescope has recently reported the detection of high-energy neutrinos spatially and temporally coincident with the flaring of the TeV blazar 1ES 1959+650. At present, the statistical significance of this observation cannot be reliably assessed, however. In this letter, we investigate whether circumstances exist where the source can produce the flux implied by the coincident...
متن کاملThe Automatic Telescope Network
Because of the scheduled GLAST mission by NASA, there is strong scientific justification for preparation for very extensive blazar monitoring in the optical bands to exploit the opportunity to learn about blazars through the correlation of variability of the gamma-ray flux with flux at lower frequencies. Current optical facilities do not provide the required capability.Developments in technolog...
متن کاملGLAST and the Extragalactic Gamma Ray Background
We show that GLAST should be able to support or rule out the unresolved-blazar hypothesis for the origin of the diffuse, extragalactic gamma ray background.
